I will be keeping you all posted during my year abroad in Germany! Here I will share my experiences, good and bad, to hopefully help future study abroad participants get an idea of what it’s like and to answer any questions about the program!
I arrived in Stuttgart, Germany on August 5th staying overnight at a nearby airport hotel before heading to Tübingen by bus. It was an interesting first night because my luggage did not arrive with me in time because I had a connecting flight in Istanbul, Turkey that I was nearly late to since my LAX-IST landed 30 minutes before departure for Stuttgart! So for those who are planning on booking flights with connecting flights, be prepared for anything! It could be a long layover or delay or it could be a very quick race to the next terminal in the airport! 🙂 Luckily I managed to make it but unfortunately they did not have time to transfer my luggage. When I arrived in the airport in Germany, I met another CSU IP student who also lost her luggage (happens more often than you think!) and stayed together at the hotel before we took a bus to Tübingen in the morning.
Taking a bus to Tübingen from Stuttgart airport is very easy! Just take the 828 line towards the Tübingen Bahnhof (train station) and it’s the last stop! The youth hostel, where we stayed and did our orientation, was only a 10 minute walk from the station so it’s very easy to navigate. When we arrived in Tübingen, I thought we arrived in a fairytale! The town is so beautiful and charming! It’s much smaller than San Francisco but I think it’s better that way, we get to experience Germany at its finest!
Because we arrived the day of orientation, we did not have much time to explore the town but still got enough pictures to send to our families 🙂 Orientation lasted for 2 days, full of paperwork for visas and housing and host family information! It’s a lot to take in, especially when you are jet lagged! But your excitement should make up for the exhaustion 🙂
I ended up getting two host families! Switching half way in the 6 weeks PLP. Right now, I am with my first host family and it is amazing! The house is a bit far from Horb, the town we have our PLP classes, but it’s a beautiful, big house with horses around us! I hope I get to ride one because I might need it to get around town because there aren’t any bus stops around me 🙂 Such a big change from SF to this small little village! It’s different and I wouldn’t have it any other way because I know this is something that will stick to me forever.
Oh and back to the luggage, it was found in a day and delivered to the hostel in Tübingen 🙂
That’s all I have for now!
